Use of electric cars minimal, suggests SA charging station patronage levels

The operator of a government-funded electric car service station in the Adelaide Hills says his facility has only been used half a dozen times in the last six months.

Grahame Murray, the station’s owner, suggested that the federal government needed to do more to make electric cars affordable, such as dropping tariffs. His recharging point received a $4,000 grant to get set up from the SA government’s Transport Department, as did five others.

"It's the way of the future. When we drove that car up the hill I couldn't believe [its performance], we actually had to take our foot off the pedal, we were zooming past other cars, it was quite extraordinary the torque in it," he told the ABC of an electric car’s performance.

Earlier this month the CEO of Italian car manufacturer Maserati questioned the environmental and efficiency claims regarding electric cars.

“All this discussion about zero emissions is nonsense. Nobody talks about the efficiency of how the battery is charged,” Complex Ride reports Maserati’s Harald Wester as saying, in comments regarding the failure to consider where the electricity at the charging stations came from.

“If we want a realistic solution to emissions then the regulators need to be more honest in how they calculate emissions. Electric cars are not the answer."
