Thales begins LRIP for F90

Thales has entered into a contract with the Department of Defence for low rate initial production of the F90 rifle.

Australian Defence Magazine reports that Thales will begin to manufacture the lightweight weapon, at its Lithgow site.

“Backed by over a century of military weapons experience, Thales’s Lithgow facility will now begin manufacturing F90 rifles as part of a de-risking exercise designed to smooth the transition in production from the existing in-service weapon to the F90,” said Thales Australia’s Kevin Wall, Vice President Armaments, in a statement.

The weapon debuted at the Eurosatory exhibition in Paris in 2012 and is based on the long-serving Steyr bullpup series weapon.
