Tesla northern California supplier network expected to boom

The Bay Area city of Fremont, where Tesla is headquartered, and the surrounding area are seeing an explosion in Tesla suppliers setting up, says the city.

The San Francisco Business Times reports that there are about 50 Tesla suppliers in northern California, of about 300 worldwide, and 10 are in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Within Fremont – where Tesla manufactures its cars at the former NUMMI Toyota/General Motors joint venture factory site – it is the largest employer among the city’s 900 manufacturers. It occupies 12 per cent of the city’s commercial space.

The electric car and storage company does not yet operate at a profit, but has ambitious goals to be producing 500,000 vehicles a year by 2018, and plans to roll out its Model 3 late-next year.

Fremont economic development director Kelly Kline said the growth in the car maker’s supplier base was just getting started.

“The greatest impact is yet to come,” said Kline, according to Yahoo Tech.

“We are moving so quickly. It’s all hands on deck in the city to meet the needs of Tesla and their supply chain.”
