An article on the ABC website says a Senate hearing has been told a Malaysian timber company did not have to advertise for Australian workers before hiring Malaysians for its Tasmanian factory.
According to the article, Senator Bob Brown questioned immigration officials about a manager’s use of 457 visas to employ 34 Malaysian workers as machinists, technicians and production managers at the company’s timber mill.
The ABC.net.au article reported Immigration Department’s Kruno Kukoc said that, to comply with the skilled migrant visa requirements, the manager only had to provide the same pay and conditions as it would for workers.
