Takata airbag crisis expands again, 2.5 million more vehicles recalled in US

Another 2.5 million vehicles have been recalled in the US due to defects in Takata airbags, affecting cars made by Volkswagen, Daimler and BMW.

The expanded recall affects 850,000 Volkswagen vehicles, 840,000 from Daimler and 840,000 from BMW, reports Reuters.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration last month predicted 5.1 million more vehicles in the US would be recalled due to suspected airbag faults, bringing the total to about 24 million.

The potential defects can cause airbags to rupture in crashes and spray metal shrapnel. According to The USA Today, the root cause of the problem isn’t exactly known.
