Symbio superlab to put Victoria at the forefront of life sciences

Symbio Laboratories’ new commercial laboratory and research and development centre will generate a $14.9 million investment in VIC.

Symbio Laboratories’ new commercial laboratory and research and development centre in the west of Melbourne will generate a $14.9 million investment in the state and advance its medical manufacturing capability.

This specialised laboratory will provide analytical testing, research and development and diagnostic manufacturing for clients across a range of industries, creating 200 new local jobs including scientists, laboratory technicians and information technology specialists.

Symbio Laboratories will produce virus testing kits and molecular biology tests for early cancer diagnosis, as well as invest in advanced medical tools at the facility.

By advancing biotechnology, molecular biology and life sciences capabilities, the facility will reduce the state’s reliance on imports and boost local supply of critical medical products.

Founded in 1997, Symbio Laboratories services analytical testing needs of the food, agricultural and environmental sectors across Australia, performing over 35,000 tests each week on ~11,000 samples, across six laboratory locations and to over 7,000 customers annually.

Symbio’s investment will see the company expand its service offering and ensure it can rapidly respond to emerging issues in the food, environmental, medical and pharmaceutical sectors – further supporting industry needs.

Symbio Laboratories will also contribute to Victoria’s workforce development and talent pipeline by partnering with local universities and TAFE institutions to provide 15 internship opportunities each year.

Victoria’s $21.4 billion health technology sector is a leader in research, testing and manufacturing, employing more than 30,000 people across the state.
