Sydney and Melbourne united in Defence

JOINT Venture company, Aerotech International, a combined Broens Industries and Metaltec Precision International business, has recently been announced by BAE Systems as a down selected company on the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program for the supply of JSF rate tooling.

BAE Systems will supply the Vertical and Horizontal tails and AFT fuselage.

Aerotech International’s specialty in the supply of tooling for commercial and defence programmes played a major role in obtaining the down select status and is currently readying itself for supply to BAE Systems.

The rate tooling involved in this programme will be to support the manufacture of composite and metallic airframe structures and involves a range of composite cure and trim tooling, assembly tools and various accessory tools.

The Aerotech Joint Venture company was created as a partnership between Sydney based Broens Industries and Melbourne based Metaltec Precision International to contend for this significant program and was developed to engage a sub-tier supply chain of over 40 companies around Australia to assist in supply chain requirements.

Broens MD Carlos Broens, said the journey in preparation for working with BAE Systems has been an encouraging and constructive one.

“It is a pleasure to be reviewing our systems and procedures in order to satisfy the BAE Systems requirements,” Broens explained.

“If successful, this contract will bring together the expertise of a number of specialist companies to deliver a comprehensive solution to BAE Systems. ”

BAE Systems Head of Procurement, Mike Marsden recently visited Aerotech at their Metaltec and Broens sites to review the current status and brief them on the future proceedings which will be governed by the decisions made in the U.S.

Mike Marsden commented that BAE Systems is looking forward to working with Aerotech and has already agreed a schedule of key production transition activities to ensure the team are ready to manufacture the needs of the F35 Programme.

“This importantly includes the co-location of Aerotech Senior Executives at the UK Facility.”

A spokesperson from Aerotech said the company looks forward to furthering their involvement with BAE Systems on the JSF programme and establishing the required procedures for the completion of the contract.
