Suzuki Australia recalls almost 6,000 faulty Grand Vitaras

Suzuki Australia is recalling 5,486 Grand Vitara vehicles over issues with the belt tension that may affect the car’s steering.

The recall affects all Grand Vitara vehicles sold from 2008 with the following VIN numbers: JSAJTAA4V00100033 – JSAJTAA4V00211614; and JSAJTDA4V00100075 – JSAJTDA4V00218489.

The cause of the recall is a manufacturing defect that sees the engine drive belt tension adjuster pulley, which maintains tension of the engine drive belt for various ancillaries, possibly incorporating a incorrectly-manufactured internal spring.

According to a notice from the ACCC, reduced tension in the belt may result in the dashboard warning lamps illuminating.

In the worst case, the belt may dislodge from the power steering pulley and the driver will need to increase efforts to steer the vehicle.

Though no reports of injuries have been filed in Australia, Suzuki Australia plans to write to owners of affected vehicles.

Failing that, owners are advised to contact their authorised Suzuki dealership for inspection and replacement of the tensioner assembly.

The Suzuki recall follows news from Honda last week that 11,000 vehicles would be recalled in Australia nationally.
