Suspicious fire at Clayton pallet factory

A stack of timber pallets burnt down in a suspicious fire in the Melbourne suburb of Clayton on Tuesday.

The blaze broke out about 5:40pm at a pallet manufacturer on the Princes Highway.

When firefighters arrived on the scene a large stack of pallets, spanning 15 cubic metres, was engulfed in flames and giving off a large plume of smoke.

The Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Services Board (MFB) had dispatched eight trucks because of numerous 000 calls.

“There were multiple calls to the same address but giving different locations,” MFB spokesman John Rees told the Waverley Leader.

Heavy smoke lingered in the area for some time after the blaze.

Police are investigating what caused the fire, and an arsonist surveyed the scene yesterday.

Anyone with information on the matter is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
