Latest shotgun microphone continues cycle of innovation

Australian sound hardware manufacturing company, RØDE Microphones, has released a new shotgun microphone.

Named the NTG5, the microphone has a new acoustic port design, a light-weight construction, and sound ready for broadcast.

The NTG5 is the latest shotgun microphone from the Sydney-based manufacturer, which RØDE have been developing since the NTG1 in 2005.

Based in Silverwater, Sydney, RØDE manufacturers its microphones, including the NTG5 in three warehouses with a total footprint of 110,000 square feet. Inside, the team includes 250 employees working on precision machinery and with backgrounds in electronics, industrial design, robotics, acoustics engineering, metal production, toolmaking, injection-mould technology, logistics, and assembly. RØDE conducts its metal machining at its manufacturing facility.

RØDE sells to 117 countries with a storefront network of 6000.

The NTG5 weighs 76 grams across 203mm in length and is designed for location recording, professional filmmaking, and critical recording situations.

The microphone also includes radio-frequency (RF) bias technology and conformal coating so that it can perform in testing weather conditions.

The microphone is a result of the R&D and design carried out by RØDE in-house.

RØDE is one of the companies underneath the Freedman Electronics umbrella, which also includes Aphex, Event Electronics, and SoundField. In 2017, the company marked its 50th anniversary and in 2013 was named the Australian Manufacturing Exporter of the year. RØDE began manufacturing microphones in Australia in the 1990s, with the RØDE NT2.
