Shorten to meet Arrium workers, call for Turnbull to increase assistance

Bill Shorten will meet Arrium workers this afternoon, and will push prime minister Malcolm Turnbull to increase the government’s support from the $49.2 million loan pledged during the election campaign.

AAP reports Shorten as saying, “The best Malcolm Turnbull has offered Arrium is a loan – this is not good enough.”

The fate of Arrium’s Whyalla steelworks featured in the campaign for July’s federal election, with both sides of politics proposing assistance packages.

Shorten will urge Turnbull to match Labor’s $100 million pledge.

Steel and iron ore company Arrium went into administration in April, owing $4 billion. The Whyalla steelwork’s is being sold off as part of Arrium Australia, with the grinding media business Moly-Cop split off and sold separately.
