Samsung and LG have won national awards for manufacturing the most energy efficient flat screen televisions in Australia.
As part of the Super-Efficient Equipment and Appliance Deployment (SEAD) awards, two Samsung television models and one LG model won prizes.
The SEAD awards are headed up by the Clean Energy Ministerial, an international partnership of 23 countries working to advance clean energy technology.
Samsung won an award for its eight star TVs in the small and medium-size categories, and LG won an award for its seven star TV in the large category.
An energy efficient eight star TV costs $21 a year to run compared with a three star TV, which costs $148, according to APN.
In presenting the awards Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change Mark Dreyfuss said both companies needed to be recognised for their commitment to creating energy efficient appliances.
“Households can reduce their bills and energy consumption dramatically with appliances that have a higher star rating,” he said.
Dreyfuss said in April new regulations would be introduced that would force many of the least energy efficient televisions out of the market.
He said models that were previously rated at four stars would be re-classified as the new one star, and consumers were increasingly demanding more energy efficient products.
The SEAD awards are also presented in Europe, India and North America and are expected to branch into other appliances, including computers, next year.
