Safe Work Australia Awards winners to be revealed

The winners of the 5th Annual Safe Work Australia Awards will be announced on 28 April 2010 at a ceremony in the Great Hall at Parliament House, Canberra.

The Awards acknowledge the efforts of individuals and organisations in their efforts to reduce the number of work-related deaths, injury and disease in the workplace, including in manufacturing facilities around Australia.

The 36 finalists are winners of their state, territory or Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission awards.

Safe Work Australia chair, Tom Phillips AM, said that by becoming a finalist in these Awards each individual and organisation has demonstrated an impressive commitment to work health and safety.

“These Awards recognise the important work that organisations and individuals are doing to make work health and safety a top priority to ensure everyone returns home safely,” he said.

“As a finalist in the category recognising Best Individual Contribution to Workplace Health and Safety, Bruce Ferguson, instructor at the Army School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering in the Department of Defence, has shown commitment to work health and safety by conducting an investigation and identifying several issues with the gas manifold system.

“Bruce proposed a new virtual reality system called the SIMWELDER be implemented into the welding trade program for environmental friendly, efficient training to reduce the risks of exposure to weld hazards.

“I encourage businesses and individuals to follow in the footsteps of Bruce Ferguson and enter the awards at their jurisdictional level so they too can be recognised for their efforts.”

Each year, the Awards provide the opportunity to focus attention on one of the most important aspects of our work life, which is to ensure the safety of ourselves and our colleagues, the organisation says.
