Opportunities for growth and diversification in the local manufacturing sector formed the focus of a roundtable discussion, hosted last Friday by the South West Development Commission.
Deputy Premier Roger Cook and Bunbury MLA Don Punch came together in Western Australia with industry leaders to discuss manufacturing priorities.
The meeting incorporated an overview of the vision and objectives of the South West Advanced Manufacturing and Technology Hub (SW AMTECH) initiative, which is being led by the South West Development Commission.
Attendees were introduced to the Hon Clive Brown, who was recently appointed as the independent Chair of the SW AMTECH steering group.
As Chair of the steering group, Mr Brown will provide independent advice to government, through the Minister for Regional Development, on the vision and benefits of a SW AMTECH.
It is expected a cutting-edge hub would provide access to state-of-the-art common use infrastructure and industry 4.0 technologies, as well as industry-led research and development, together with on-site education and training facilities.
Commission CEO Mellisa Teede said government and industry were working together to fulfil the potential of the sector in Bunbury and the wider region.
“The roundtable provided the opportunity for industry representatives to join in the discussion around manufacturing priorities and aspirations – it was a great chance to share ideas around opportunities for growth and diversification in the region,” Ms Teede said.
“We will continue to work side-by-side with local manufacturing companies and industry representatives as we progress with the phases of a feasibility study for a SW AMTECH.”
Mr Punch welcomed the opportunity to bring leaders of industry and government together.
“It was great to showcase manufacturing capability to the Deputy Premier, the Minister for State Development, Jobs and Trade; Hydrogen Industry; Tourism; Science,” Mr Punch said.
