PREVIOUSLY known only for its numerous roundabouts and public servants, with the delivery of the imaQcut 12.6 vertical plasma cutting machine to its new owner at Man-U-Fact, located in Canberra, the Nation’s Capital can now be known as the place where innovative new machining technologies are found.
According to Bernie Brenan of Man-U-Fact, his decision to purchase the imaQcut over other conventional machines was mainly due to issues associated with handling large, thin, painted sheet.
On conventional machines it is extremely difficult to prevent the painted surface being scratched when placing the material on the cutting rack. There is said to be no such problem with the near vertical cutting rack of the plasma cutting machine.
Brenan said other benefits built in to the machine also played a key role in his decision to purchase.
One factor was workplace safety, with all fumes being produced from the cutting process contained within the machine and extracted to a combined extraction filter unit.
Another plus is that the space required is minimal at 5m2 for the machine. This allowed the purchase of two sliding cutting racks one feeding from each side of the machine for a total of 14m x 1m of floor space. The plasma cutting machine was then placed against a wall.
With an average cutting time of 110 seconds for cutting components due to a cutting speed of up to 10m/min, the operator is busy loading and unloading sheets, to keep the machine working. Both cutting racks have a reference point to allow two sheets to be placed on each rack if required.
The Australian designed and built imaQcut features a cutting area of 3.6m x 1.8m, and is fitted with a Powermax 1250 plasma source for cutting continuously up to 10mm thick and with axis speed to 60m/min.
