Aluminium
company Boyne Smelters Limited has requested it be exempted from the Renewable
Energy Target scheme, claiming jobs were at risk.
The Gladstone Observer reports that BSL’s general manager has said the $25 million
a year it pays under the RET, which is under a federal government review, may
be too much to bear.
As
an aluminium smelter, BSL’s Joe Rae said it was “highly exposed” to the cost of
the scheme. Under these costs it would be forced to sack workers.
“Indeed, after
the current partial exemption the RET still costs BSL around $25 million per annum,” The Observer reports him as
saying.
“The
continuation of these RET costs can only be offset by further reducing
workforce and reducing capital expenditure.”
