Global renewable energy company Windlab has received approval to construct a new wind farm in Far North Queensland.

The project, which will include 30 wind turbines, was given the green light by the state government’s Department of Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning.

When complete, the Lakeland wind farm is expected to have capacity of up to 100mW subject to the choice of turbine and site optimisation, and will connect to the national electricity grid.

Windlab was established to commercialise wind-energy assessment technology developed by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia’s federal research body.

“Receiving approval for a wind farm is perhaps the single most important milestone in the development process,” said Roger Price, Windlab CEO.

“With work on the connection agreement and EPC selections well advanced, the focus is now on financing to allow the project to reach financial close as planned.”

Construction is set to start in the second half of 2018.
