Manufacturing intelligence software

THE latest business solution available from automation specialist Rockwell Automation is the powerful IncuityEMI version 2.6 ‘enterprise manufacturing intelligence’ (EMI) software.

This innovative software tool has been designed to access the data from many disparate sources throughout a manufacturing facility, then organise, analyse and present that information via user-friendly web browsers or similar remote interfaces.

Founded on a standard data model, the IncuityEMI software unifies normally incompatible information–such as the time-series data generated on the plant floor and the transaction-oriented data contained in enterprise business systems–and enables decisions to be made.

IncuityEMI treats the various data sources as ‘silos’ of information. Such sources could be plant-floor controllers, SCADA and historians, plus laboratory, batch and maintenance systems, as well as manufacturing execution systems (MES) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.

The UPM references this information without extracting or storing it, then combines and correlates the real-time data in the context of recreational and transactional business data, such as business goals, supply chain requirements and compliance parameters.

The real-time data is presented simply in the form of web portals or dashboards, plus can be exported to Microsoft Excel. In this way, IncuityEMI provides a holistic view of production, empowering decision-makers.

The IncuityEMI version 2.6 software tool complements Rockwell Automation’s FactoryTalk integrated production and performance software suite. Each of the modular FactoryTalk modules–such as FactoryTalk View (an HMI) FactoryTalk ProductionCentre (an MES), FactoryTalk Historian and FactoryTalk AssetCentre–can be accessed and analysed by the IncuityEMI software.

High performance solid carbide drills

THE latest exciting innovation from Dormer is a range of high performance solid carbide drills specifically for machining composite materials.

Used increasingly in the aerospace industry, the aerodynamic qualities and excellent strength-to-weight ratio of composite materials will help manufacturers to meet targets for weight and fuel efficiency.

As such, composites look set to become the predominant material used in aircraft manufacture over the next 3-5 years. They are, however, more brittle than metals, and their machining has brought new challenges.

Designed for use in Polymer Matrix Composites (PMCs), also known as Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRPs), the drills work equally as well in Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymers (CFRPs) and Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymers (GFRPs).

The range features a unique, patented point design which reduces thrust and torque requirements. This improves cutting efficiency and significantly reduces splintering and delamination at exit.

There is an internal coolant option for wet machining and a diamond coated option to further enhance tool life. The range is available from 2.38mm to 20mm diameter and with overall lengths up to 310mm as a ‘special order’, allowing the end user to specify their own requirements, including sizes, applications and cutting conditions.

Diode laser gas analyser

SIEMENS has further developed its TDL technology with the SITRANS SL diode laser gas analyser featuring an in-line reference cell filled with a non-interfering reference gas allowing for a fast and non-contact measurement of gas concentrations in process or flue gases.

The gas analyser can be used in various industry and applications, such as process control in the chemical industry, process optimisation within the steel industry and as combustion control for boilers and municipal waste incinerators.

It is said to also be a very effective device for measuring minimum or maximum concentrations limits for oxygen in explosive proof environments.

The measuring principle of the analyser is based on the specific light absorption of different gas components using light from a laser diode that is sent from the transmitter through the process gas to the detector on the receiver side.

As the band width of the laser light is extremely narrow, only the gas component of interest will interact with it. Other process influences, such as dust and temperature, are easily eliminated due to the excellent compensation capabilities of this technique. The characteristics of the laser allow single-line spectroscopy free of interferences.

Additional features include: a modular design for easy maintenance and a cross-duct sensor pair — transmitter and receiver. The entire analytical instrument is fitted into these two enclosures, which are interconnected with one cable. Another cable is connected from the receiver providing the power and the customer interface. The receiver hosts a Local User Interface (LUI) which is operated with an IR remote control.

Safety boots just ‘electrifying’

A NEW entrant into the Australian safety footwear market from Europe is promoting a safety boot branded as an ‘Electrical ‘ boot as denoting its suitability for use by electricians and personnel working on, near or close to electrical installations.

The ‘Electrical’ boot is priced at a premium to other safety footwear choices already available on the Australian market and while it complies with the recognised Australian/New Zealand Safety Footwear Standard (AS/NZS 2210.3) and other internationally recognised measurements, the range offers no other advantage over most safety footwear ranges readily available to the Australian market.

The boot has been featured recently by the Electrical Trades Union and promoted by some safety footwear suppliers as ‘non-conductive’ safety footwear.

Oliver Footwear, Australia’s largest producer of industrial and safety footwear advises that over 80% of Oliver safety footwear ranges offer a certified electrical performance at least equal to, or in most instances superior to the new product being promoted as it enters the market place.

Moreover the electrical performances of the Oliver ranges are tested and certified by a NATA registered laboratory for their electrical shock resistance under a method which requires that the footwear ‘shall be capable of withstanding the application of 18,000 Volts at 60 Hertz for 1 minute with no current flow or leakage current in excess of 1.0mA under dry conditions.’

Standards Authorities also warn that electrically insulating footwear cannot guarantee 100% protection from electric shock and additional measures to avoid this risk are essential.

Rugged slat chain conveyer

HARSH operating environments require rugged industrial solutions, which is why Slat-con has been developed by materials handling specialist and conveyor manufacturer, Industrial Conveying (Aust) Pty Ltd.

Slat-con is a heavy duty slat chain conveyor for the most rugged applications. Already, the Slat-con technology has been successfully used in the waste handling industry as well as in aluminium smelters and foundries.

One of its most significant technical points is a specially formed steel slat which overlaps with the next link to form a solid bed, therefore preventing any spillage.

This ensures that substances ranging from abrasive material such as glass, household waste or even steel shavings all the way through to hot materials can be conveyed without the normal level of restriction a conventional belt conveyor has to cope with.

Slat-con is manufactured to comply with all relevant Australian standards. It has a modular construction and a heavy fabricated frame to allow for a flexible design approach.

Sizes range all the way up to 1500mm wide and 30 metres in length.

Modular safety system

SIEMENS has just released its innovative modular safety system — the SIRIUS 3RK3 series

With the innovative new Sirius 3RK3 modular safety system MSS, Siemens offers an enhanced safety solution, that combines the functionality of a simple safety relay and a fail-safe programmable logic controller (PLC).

The core of the system is the central unit with eight safety-related inputs, one safety-related relay output and one safety-related solid-state output. Up to seven safety or standard expansion modules can be connected to the central unit. The expandability makes the one system easily scalable for applications with as little as three safety functions to as many as 40.

The 3RK3 safety system can provide significant savings where several safety relays are required to combine various safety functions as no wiring is required due to its modular design.

The Siemens 3RK3 safety system offers users a substantial reduction on future installation costs when circumstances change or additional functionality is required. Extra functions can be easily added by installing additional expansion modules.

Another major feature of the modular safety system is the ES (MSS ES) parameterisation software that, unlike some of the competition, has the ability of replacing the laborious wiring of individual functions by fast and easy on line parameterisation.

Siemens is offering an MSS introductory starter package (catalogued 3RK3921-1AA10) including a basic module, a connection cable and the specific MSS ES parameterisation software at a special package price well under the price of individual components.
