Increased data centre rack efficiency

The new Mixed Media Platform from TE Enterprise Networks is the company’s latest addition to its range of leading data centre infrastructure solutions. It is a total package designed to support a mixed copper and fibre infrastructure in data centers.

The new system makes the most out of a 19-inch rack space. Users save space and money by mixing copper and fibre within a single panel and take advantage of free space alongside, above and below the 19-inch envelope.

At the heart of the Mixed Media Platform are two innovative product concepts: the UCP (Universal Connectivity Platform) and the NETpodium rack system.

The UCP is designed to deliver maximum rack efficiency and multiple media deployment. It includes a versatile range of components that include patch panels, sub-floor panel and overhead panel mounts, pre-terminated links and adaptor modules.

The UCP accepts pre-terminated copper looms, fibre cassettes and MRJ21 high density copper connectivity cassettes, for faster deployment and high reliability. It is also fully compatible with TE Connectivity’s AMPTRAC intelligent information managed connectivity solution.

The NETpodium rack system complements the UCP both inside and outside of the 19-inch envelope while maintaining the electrical and mechanical integrity of the channel. It is based on a light aluminum, open-frame concept which can be transformed into a closed cabinet if required. Its high-density cable managers incorporate corner brackets and fingers in a single unit. These provide bend radius control for both copper and fibre and excellent patch cable support in high-density environments. They also ensure cable containment and prevent the accidental disturbance or removal of patch cords.

A tool-less fastener enables rapid installation, allowing all accessories to be fixed in just three steps: insert/position/lock. Thanks to the innovative design of the NETpodium rack system’s aluminum profile, the installer has the freedom to mount accessories wherever they are required, simply by adjusting the positioning of the fastener along the T-channel.

Key benefits include a common “look and feel” for data centre patching frames, support for standards-compliant installation inside and outside the 19-inch envelope, and additional patching space on the frame when high port density switches are deployed. It also acts as a building block that the infrastructure manager can deploy today and still be sure that it is flexible enough to support most network topologies planned for the future.

For the installer, it is lightweight, versatile and easy to construct, offers tool-less assembly of accessories, and when deployed with UCP it can remove patching headaches.

TE Connectivity Solutions are designed and tested to guarantee full interoperability with major technology leaders. TE is member of the technology developer programs of Cisco, Brocade, Extreme and others. TE has been granted “Endorser” status under the European Code of Conduct for Data Centers.

Extraction and verification technology for the logistics sector

Hardware and software solutions provider, Intermec Technologies has announced the regional availability of VERDEX; the first mobile address extraction and verification technology for the Australian and New Zealand supply chain sector.

VERDEX works by capturing an image of text-based information such as an address or forms data, using a handheld scanner and performs a SmartMatch verification against a custom database of information. After verification, the image goes through a cleansing process to provide instant address verification from the point of collection.

Reportedly easy to adapt into existing transport and delivery processes with minimal user intervention, VERDEX increases productivity whilst virtually eliminating all address-related errors.

VERDEX is used at the point of collection to help eliminate UAA parcels and provide planners with early visibility to previously unannounced and unverified items.

When combined with mobile computers and mobile label printers, VERDEX enables Australian and New Zealand logistics workers to quickly and accurately introduce parcels into the track-and-trace system and re-label them at the time of collection.

Mastering the art of crack detection and sizing

Following the successful training of several more Level 1 and Level 2 operators in late July- early August, Russell Fraser Sales has reported a spike in the number of NDT companies ordering Alternating Current Field Measurement (ACFM) equipment.

According to the company, TSC’s state-of-the-art technology offers efficient and accurate results in the detection and sizing of surface breaking cracks.

ACFM is a specialised electromagnetic inspection technique which provides accurate data on a defect’s location and length.

The significance of a defect, in terms of structural integrity, generally depends on the depth of the defect, the company says. Using mathematical models, the system provides the depth of the defect, thus allowing an immediate evaluation of the significance of the indication.

The AMIGO Crack Microgauge system offers rapid scanning using a hand-held probe and reliable crack detection and sizing (length and depth).

A dual frequency option is available with 5kHz (for ferritic steel) and 50kHz (for improved sensitivity on non-ferrous metals).

The AMIGO can operate for at least 5 hours on one fully-charged battery pack. Full data storage of scans facilitates back-up, off-line view, audit purposes and reports.

With ACFM there is reportedly no need to clean the inspection area to bare metal. The AMIGO is capable of inspection through thin metallic coatings, or through non-conducting coatings several millimetres thick. A wide range of geometries is available with TSC’s active topside probes.

RFS will be running further training courses certified by Lloyds Register to Recommended Practice SNT-TC-1A later this year. To register, contact RFS.

New Equostat 3 hardness tester

Russell Fraser Sales has released  Proceq’s new Equostat 3 Micro-Hardness Tester, made in Switzerland.

The Equostat 3 is the latest offering from the Proceq family best-known for Equotip 3 and Equotip Piccolo/Bambino.

The Equostat 3 is designed for inspecting surface layers on scratch-sensitive or polished materials or parts as thin as 130μm.

The Equostat 3 displays the signal curve as well as operating instructions in real time. The operating instructions offer guidance as to when the test loads should be applied and released. This enables users to achieve the most repeatable measurements of any commercially available hardness tester.

The Equostat 3 probe integrates with the Equotip 3 indicating device to combine in one instrument the Leeb rebound principle with the Rockwell principle. Equostat 3 can also be connected directly to a PC.

A measuring clamp, magnetic feet and special feet are also available to adapt to most sample shapes.

Ethernet for harsh environments

RAD Data Communications has launched a new range of switches designed to optimise operational processes on an Ethernet-based network even in mission-critical, harsh and industrial environments.

Protect your people and processes with innovative warehouse racking

Even the best forklift drivers have accidental collisions with racking. While worst-case scenarios involving a rack collapse are rare, impact damage weakens the racking structure, compromising its load carrying capacity and potentially putting both property and life at risk, says Dematic.

The Colby Protect-a-Rack is designed to be fitted to just about every competing brand of drive-in or selective pallet racking.

The system is certified and patented and reportedly outperforms traditional steel and plastic rack protection systems. It does this through ensuring that impact forces are transferred into the rack at its strongest point i.e. the brace nodes.

The Colby Protect-a-rack is made of heavy duty steel that ensures long life and heavy duty protection. Its versatile design is said to fit almost any type of racking, and installation is reportedly simple and quick.

The system’s streamlined design maximises clear bay entry, and its tapered surfaces deflect impacts and simplify bay entries, says Dematic.

Virtual permieter-fence alert system from FLIR

FLIR Systems has released a ‘virtual’ perimeter-fence alert system called Thermal Fence – a fully-integrated system which uses thermal security cameras for simultaneous threat detection and assessment.

The system recently won the Best New Product award at Security2011, Australia’s largest security conference and exhibition.

The Thermal Fence uses FLIR Sensors Manager (FSM) software, providing automated perimeter approach surveillance, intrusion detection and alert capabilities.

According to FLIR, the system covers perimeter security applications including critical infrastructure, petro-chemical facilities, nuclear facilities, commercial campuses and residential installations.

FAST-ACT chemical spill response kit

A COMPACT yet visible wall unit from Enware is designed to give workers immediate action to the company’s FAST-ACT broad spectrum toxic chemical spill response sorbent.

The unit incorporates a 500g shaker of FAST-ACT along with directions for immediate chemical spill response to deal with a wide range of hazardous chemical spills in laboratories, including commercial, industrial, scientific, educational and medical facilities.

The easy-to-use shaker doesn’t require any special training to use, and no pre-mixing is required, the company says.

The FAST-ACT solution is formulated to eliminate hesitation and delay in emergencies because users don’t have to think about which treatment to use.

King’s stock picking system saves backs

WHEN stock picking from pallets under racking, if the front cartons have been removed, the operator then has to bend down, reach in, and lift the rear cartons out.

With operators lifting even a 10kg carton, several hundred times a day, the cumulative total can reach 1 to 2 tonnes, says King Materials Handling.

The company has designed Easy Picker, which consists of a base frame with a sliding deck attached to it. The deck is fitted with a manual turntable, on which the pallet full of product is placed via forklift.

In order to reach those hard to get at cartons at the rear, the frame is slid out and the pallet rotated. When pushed back in, the back is now at the front, making stock picking easier.

The unit is 120mm high, so there is very little overall load height difference.

An Easy Picker – Lifter is also available, with a spring-assisted scissor lift built-in. This system also raises the pallets up to a comfortable working height, eliminating bending.

Modular pallet conveyor sections suitable for various setups

MATERIALS handling company Industrial Conveying has developed a set of modular pallet conveyor sections that can easily be assembled to meet requirements in different industries, from industrial processing through to sensitive and food-grade sectors.

The pallet conveyor sections include twin and triple chain conveyors, powered roller conveyors and transfers for use with Australian Standard pallets for weights up to1,200 kilograms.

The conveyor sections are assembled in lengths of 1.5, 3, 4.5 and 6 metres. Conveyors of non-standard lengths, widths and loads are also available.

Optional painted mild steel or aluminium plate decking for the twin and triple chain conveyors is available as an added safety feature, or for specific applications where cleanliness is a priority, such as in the pharmaceutical and food industries.

Conveyor drive units can be fitted with a shaft-mounted external motor or an internal motor arrangement as a standard option. The design utilises pressed steel side members and bolted construction using many common components for versatility and simplicity in assembly, to meet specific customer requirements.

Toyota’s new range of 6-8 tonne forklifts

TOYOTA’S new 7-Series forklift range comes standard with the company’s System of Active Stability (SAS), which incorporates an active mast function controller and tilt levelling features.

Models in the new series of forklifts offer three-way closed loop catalytic muffler systems, double-action hand-operated park brakes, neutral start safety switches, and memory tilt steering columns. The vehicles also have low, wide-entry steps with dual operator assist grips.

Toyota says the 7-Series also benefit from low noise emissions and high visibility overhead guards.

Three models are included in the range: 7FGU60, 7FGU70 and 7FGU80 in 6,000kg, 7,000kg and 8,000kg capacities, replacing Toyota’s current 5-Series models.

Pneumatic tyre forklift cost-effective yet reliable

THE H50CT pneumatic tyre forklift from Adaptalift Hyster is designed as a cost-effective option for moderate materials handling applications.

The forklift offers sealed electrical connectors to O-ring face seal fittings on the truck chassis, durable transmissions, good fuel economy, operator comfort and ergonomic design, says the company.

With a lift capacity of 2,500kg, the H50CT is said to strike a balance between the number of loads it moves and the amount of fuel it uses, which is 12% per cent less fuel than similar forklifts use on average.

The optional integral sideshifter allows loads to be optimally positioned, and the responsive electronically-controlled inching adjustments are designed to give the operator better control of load positioning.

The H50CT is suitable for applications in agricultural, general warehousing and distribution, beverage distribution and bottling, light manufacturing, or retail. An optional 2.6L diesel engine is also available.
