Maxim’s latest PMIC enables highest sensitivity optical measurements

In wearables, optical-sensing accuracy is impacted by a variety of biological factors unique to the user. Designers have been striving to increase the sensitivity of optical systems, in particular the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), to cover a broader spectrum of use cases.

Traditional low-quiescent-current regulators favoured in wearable applications come with tradeoffs that degrade SNR on the wrist, such as high-amplitude ripple, low-frequency ripple and long-settling times.

Some designers have even turned to high-quiescent-current alternatives to overcome these drawbacks, but they must deal with increased power consumption, which reduces battery runtime or requires a larger battery.

The MAX20345 features a buck-boost regulator based on an innovative architecture that’s optimised for accurate heart-rate, blood-oxygen (SpO2) and other optical measurements.

The regulator delivers the desired low-quiescent-current performance without the drawbacks that degrade SNR and, as a result, can increase performance by up to 7dB (depending on measurement conditions).

The MAX20345 is also the latest in a line of ultra-low-power PMICs for small wearables and IoT devices that help raise efficiency without sacrificing battery runtime.

To meet these needs, the MAX20345 integrates a lithium-ion battery charger; six voltage regulators, each with ultra-low quiescent current; three nanoPower bucks (900nA typical) and three LDO regulators with ultra-low quiescent current (as low as 550nA typical).

Two load switches allow disconnecting of system peripherals to minimise battery drain. Both the buck-boost and the bucks support dynamic voltage scaling (DVS), providing additional power-saving opportunities when lower voltages can be deployed under favourable conditions. The MAX20345 is available in a 56-bump, 0.4mm pitch, 3.37mm x 3.05mm wafer-level package (WLP).

Key Advantages

  • Superior Performance for Optical Systems: the integrated buck-boost regulator provides the low ripple at high frequency that will not interfere with optical measurements. These short settling times support the high-sensitivity optical-sensor measurements on wearables.
  • Extended Battery Life: regulators with nanoPower quiescent current reduce sleep and standby power, which in turn extends battery runtime and allows for smaller battery size. High-efficiency regulators preserve battery energy during active states.
  • Small Footprint: by eliminating multiple discrete components, the MAX20345 provides a sophisticated power architecture for space-constrained wearable and IoT designs.

Cost saving with new data cable for use in e-chains

With more than 1,300 products, Treotham has the largest portfolio of tested igus cables for use in energy chains, for every industry. Igus has developed the CF8821 data cable as a cost-effective alternative for builders of low duty cycle machines. With the new cable series, machine builders can not only save up to 30 percent on costs, but also receive a cable with UL approval that is guaranteed to work.

Data cables are used in a wide variety of sectors, from machine tools to robots. The cables must always withstand forces when running in energy chains.

Igus has developed a new, especially cost-effective data cable specifically for applications without high mechanical requirements, such as adjustment devices, encoder units, and wood or stone processing machines. By selecting the chainflex CF8821, machine builders can save up to 30 per cent cost when compared to standard chainflex data cables.

Offered with small cross-sections, the new cable is suitable for use in e-chains with a bend radius of 12.5 x d. Shielding protects them from interference. The highly flexible PVC outer jacket is silicone-free and flame-retardant. Like all igus cables from Treotham, the new data cable has also been tested in the in-house 2,750 m2 test laboratory. This makes igus the only manufacturer on the market to offer a 36-month guarantee on its entire cable range. For the new data cable, Treotham promises a service life of up to 5 million cycles. In addition to the guarantee, UL approval of the CF8821 cables opens up possibilities for machine builders exporting to the American market.

Double safety thanks to chainflex cables with UL approvals

With more than 1,300 types, Treotham offers the widest range of energy chain cables with the world’s most extensive selection with international approvals, including cables with the UL certification. One of the biggest challenges for international plant manufacturers is the different technical standards and norms on the OEM and operator side in North America. Organisations in Europe and America have been trying to harmonise their regulations for years. The motion plastics specialist igus makes an important contribution towards the harmonisation with 1,044 out of the total 1,354 cables in its portfolio having UL-certification. Thanks to UL approval, small to medium-sized companies as well as large OEMs can export their machines to America more easily and commission them without any problems. UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories which is the most well-known and comprehensively accepted test organisation in the USA. It regularly publishes standards and certifies products such as the chainflex cables. If there are test certificates for the cables, commissioning is quick and smooth.

ICP DAS’s new LRA-900 RS-232/RS-485 to LoRa radio modem

ICP Electronics Australia has introduced ICP DAS’ new LRA-900 RS-232/RS-485 to LoRa Radio Modem.

The LRA-900 is an RS-232/RS-485 to radio device designed for remote communication, which operates in a transparent transmission mode and makes use of the physical layer of LoRA (Long Range) transmission technology. It provides a maximum line-of-sight (LOS) transmission distance of 1500 metres at an RF bit rate of less than 1000 bps.

To overcome any interference that might be encountered during use in harsh environments, the LRA-900 allows the minimum RF transmission bit rate to be configured to as low as 250 bps, enhancing the modem’s capability to resist noise and other interference. Harsh environments are no barrier to device operation either, as the LRA-900 can operate in temperatures spanning from -25°C up to 75°C.

Finally, the RF channels and Group IDs can be adjusted, which is helpful for avoiding interference in situations where two LRA-900 networks are operating adjacent to each other. The RF channels and Group IDs can be configured in order to distinguish and control different LRA-900 networks.

Key Features:

  • LoRa (Long Range) Transmission Technology
  • Transparent Transmission Mode
  • 32 RF Channels (Frequency Band: 864~ 871.5MHz, 915 to 922.5MHz, with 868 +/- 4 MHz Use Recommended)

AFL releases 41S Splicer in ANZ region

Fujikura, the name synonymous with fusion splicing technology, has released the latest version of their active cladding alignment fusion splicing range, the 41S.

The 41S uses core sensing loss estimation technology to provide accurate assessment of splice loss available in any active cladding alignment splicer. Enabled by Warm Splice Imaging (WSI), the 41S can determine the accuracy of core alignment by evaluation of the splice during the heating process. This technology delivers splice loss estimates with a greater level of accuracy than those based on cladding alignment alone.

The 41S boasts a 6-second splice time and 25-second shrink time, an extended-life battery rated for up to 200 splice and heat cycles, and long-life electrodes lasting 5,000 splices. The 5″ touchscreen monitor provides simple, intuitive menu navigation and a crystal clear image even in the brightest sunlight. Online software updates allow users to stay up-to-date as new splice programs become available.

The dual-camera, active V-groove alignment system of the 41S provides consistent splicing performance in the most challenging conditions. Interchangeable sheath clamps or fibre holders provide versatility for user preference, and compatibility with fusion installable connectors. All this inside a fully-ruggedised design that is shock, dust and rain proof, with its own carry case that converts to a work station for maximum portability.

Cleaver management via Bluetooth connection with the CT50 Cleaver tracks usage and enables automated blade rotation as needed. Backed by the best service team in the industry, the Fujikura 41S is the ideal splicer to use when portability, ruggedness, and reliability are needed for your splicing application.

The 41S is now available in the ANZ region through AFL.

Turck’s Beep concept simplifies communication with I/O modules

Turck’s Beep concept connects Ethernet networks with up to 33 I/O modules with just one IP address in Profinet, Ethernet/IP and Modbus TCP networks.

Turck’s new Backplane Ethernet Extension Protocol, or Beep for short, is simplifying the use of its TBEN and FEN20 multiprotocol block I/O modules. BEEP makes it possible to connect networks with up to 33 TBEN modules (1 master, 32 slaves) and up to 480 bytes of data to the PLC via a single IP address in Profinet, Ethernet/IP and Modbus TCP networks. Through the reduction of the IP addresses, the user can quickly create high density I/O networks and also connect them with low cost controllers.

The user defines here the first device on the line as the Beep master via the integrated web server. The master scans the connected network and automatically configures the data assignment for all connected modules. As all parameters of the device configuration are stored in the master, Beep supports the rapid exchange of individual modules, thus efficiently reducing downtime and the associated costs. The Beep master detects a new device automatically and downloads the relevant parameters.

Beep is now available on all IP67 TBEN multiprotocol modules with digital I/O signals of the L and S series, as well as on Turck’s FEN20 modules, and is compatible with all standard Ethernet components.

Turck introduces IP67 RFID interface with OPC UA server

Turck’s TBEN-L RFID module with an integrated OPC UA server simplifies the connection of factory automation to the IT world.

At the Hannover Messe Turck is presenting an IP67 RFID interface with an integrated OPC UA server. The platform-independent OPC UA communication standard enables the TBEN-L OPC UA to simplify the integration of RFID systems in systems such as ERP, MES or cloud systems, as well as in controllers. Authentication and integrated security protocols protect communication between the systems from unauthorized access and manipulation.

The TBEN-L5-4RFID-8DXP-OPC-UA module is compliant with the companion specification for Auto-ID devices. This standard enables the customer to replace devices between the Auto-ID systems of different manufacturers. The standard specification for the use of RFID and barcode readers saves the customer having to do manufacturer-specific programming and simplifies integration in the higher-level systems, thus often eliminating the engagement of a system integrator.

Like the other TBEN-L RFID modules, the robust OPC UA RFID module comes with a high degree of protection (IP65/67/69K), as well as four RFID interfaces for connecting HF and/or UHF read/write heads. Eight additional universal channels can be used as inputs or outputs. This simplifies the connection of sensors as trigger signals or actuators as indicator lights for acknowledging processes.
