Digital differential test gauge

CRYSTAL Engineering has introduced the XP2i-DP differential digital test gauge which is also capable of data logging.

This rugged, intrinsically safe, ATEX certified test gauge has an accuracy of 0.1% of reading between 20-100% and 0.02% of full scale between 0-20%.

The stainless steel sensors are able to operate in wet or dry applications and the low pressure side is protected by a burst disc feature that will eliminate replacement of the gauge when overloaded.

Unlike bourdon tube and capsule type gauges, the burst disc is easily replaceable and can be done in the field.

The XP2i-DP is available in two differential ranges 0-15 PSI and 0-100 PSI and rated up to 100 PSI static pressures.

Both are also capable of reading continuous vacuum and have a temperature compensated range of -10°C to 50°C.

Flowmeter calibration facility

ENDRESS+Hauser’s new flowmeter calibration facility in Reinach, Switzerland produces measurements that deviate no more than 0.015 % from the reference value.

Constant controls ensure the high requirements on calibration accuracy are reliably satisfied.

This accuracy enables the company to cope with increasingly stringent customer requirements in future-oriented sectors such as life sciences, chemicals, foodstuffs and petrochemicals.

Throughout production, Endress+Hauser subjects all the components to rigorous checking. The assembled flowmeters are then tested, ‘wet’ calibrated, and adjusted in state-of-the-art calibration facilities.

Calibration means the flow indicated by a meter is compared with the reference value furnished by the calibration facility, and the meter is then adjusted accordingly.

Customers are able to dependably measure and process costly raw materials and intermediate products, as well as comply with strict quality specifications and implement cost-effective process automation.

This is particularly important for custody transfer applications, such as fuel loading.

All of Endress+Hauser’s flow calibration facilities are accredited by internationally approved authorities – including SAS, A2LA and CNAS – in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025.

Since all test resources are seamlessly traceable back to national standards, customers anywhere in the world can expect the same uniform high quality, be it in product quality or in field testing of their process facilities.

pH electrode

A ROBUST new pH sensor from Endress+Hauser can now solve the problem of reference contamination commonly experienced during pH measurement in ultra harsh conditions such as mining slurries, and paper and pulp applications.

pH measurement within ultra harsh applications that include high solid content poses several challenges.

Because of the harmful ions that defuse into the pH electrode reference system and the high solid content, the potential to disable the electrode by blocking the diaphragm under these extreme conditions is high.

The surface area of the pH electrode diaphragm therefore needs to be enlarged to avoid blockage. However this increases the risk of reference contamination as the diaphragm is porous and more harmful ions can now enter the reference system of the pH electrode.

Traditionally, these enlarged diaphragms have been made from wood due to its resistance to contamination, but the wooden diaphragm is relatively thick and slows down the electrode’s response time. In most critical applications, slow response times are not acceptable.

Endress+Hauser has developed a new pH electrode (the Orbisint CPS11D and the Orbipore CPS91D) that addresses these issues, combining the advantage of having a contaminant resistant reference, with fast response time and high reproducibility.

Utilising ‘ion exchange’ technology, Endress+Hauser has placed the ion trap in the electrodes’ reference system guarding the silver chloride wire. The ‘ion exchange trap’ intercepts contaminating ions and allows the electrical signal to pass between the chambers without contamination.

The new Endress+Hauser design offers customers a faster and more accurate measurement alternative to pH electrodes with wood diaphragms – in the presence of reference contaminants and high solids content present in paper and pulp; slurries, chemical and mineral leaching applications.

Having been proven in long-term tests, both models of electrode – the Orbisint CPS11D and the Orbipore CPS91D – are available with Memosens technology, whereby the signals are transmitted digitally.

Memosens sensors not only store information calibration data, but also fundamentally process the data, and can provide the information to outline a full maintenance regime.

The storage of the calibration data in the sensor means that the electrodes can be cleaned, conditioned and calibrated under optimum laboratory conditions, thereby reducing maintenance time and costs and improving longevity.

Scanner connection box

SICK Australia’s new CDF600 connection box allows easy integration in Profibus networks for all barcode scanners of SICK’s CLV6xx series.

In addition, signals (e.g. from reading-gate trigger photoelectric switches) can be detected via the two digital inputs. Two more digital inputs are available for switching signals.

All connections can be plugged in externally; no parameterisation software is necessary to commission the CDF600 (Connection Device Fieldbus).

These factors permit ‘plug & play’ integration of scanners and sensors, whose settings are stored in a parameter memory unit integrated in the CDF600 – for rapid device replacement.

High-res incremental encoders

THE high-resolution incremental encoders of the DFS60 series from Sick Stegmann cover every type of mounting.

The final positioners are now available in a total of 18 mechanical designs for all common industrial mounting situations.

The DFS60 series encoders are rotative final positioners used in machine and plant construction.

All common mounting situations are covered with one clamping flange and one servo-flange each for solid shafts, as well as slip-on and push-through hollow shafts with five metric and three non-metric diameters each.

The DFS60 incremental hollow shaft encoder can be used with line numbers of up to 65,536 and displays its strengths, in particular, in the harsh conditions of machine and plant construction.

The DFS60 achieves extreme ruggedness combined with maximum precision by means of its housing with an enclosure rating of IP65, and due to the use of a code disk made of nickel.

The nickel disk is considerably more sturdy than glass encoder disks with the same resolution and is at least as durable as plastic code disks, but offers much better resolution and temperature resistance: the operating temperature of the highly precise DFS60 thus ranges from -20°C to +100°C.

Easy mounting

The encoder’s universal cable outlet – radially and axially alignable – reduces the number of variants and simplifies installation when space is limited.

Also mounting-friendly: the clamping ring with just one Torx screw for fixing the DFS60. Customers can program the DFS60 with any line number in the range from 1 to 65,536, a zero pulse width of 90° to 270°, and select the voltage level of the TTL or HTL interfaces.

The distance between the DFS60’s two shaft bearings has been increased (while retaining the 60mm housing common on the market) in such a way that a hitherto impossible vibration-free and optimum true running is now achieved – even at maximum operating rotational speeds.

The speed values detected are consequently unaffected by mechanical eccentricity or tolerance factors, unlike other encoders – where these effects cause swings in the measurement value curves.

A further improvement involves the insulation between the motor shaft and the encoder. This prevents leakage currents from the motor shaft reaching the encoder bearing assembly and causing damage.

Flow measurement coupling pads

FLEXIM’s new small black coupling pads are said to add to the long term durability of clamp on ultrasonic flow meters. The pads serve as the right acoustic coupling contact.

One of the advantages of non-contact ultrasonic flow meters is their low maintenance requirement.

The flow transducers are simply attached to the outside of the pipe. They are not in contact with the medium to be measured and are thus free from wear and tear.

The only important condition for proper functionality is a good transmission of the acoustic signals through the entire pipe and back.

Normally a paste is used to achieve this coupling between the transducers and the pipe. Depending on on-site conditions this paste needs to be re-applied from time to time.

Flexim’s coupling pads are made from materials that can tolerate high temperatures and retain their elasticity over long periods without the need for frequent maintenance.

The coupling pads take the place of such coupling pastes between the transducers and the pipe. They are held in place and pressed against the pipe with properly designed pipe mount fixtures.

The pad material is flexible and durable enough to maintain the acoustic contact. There is no longer the need to re-apply any pastes.
