Maxim’s single-chip security solutions safeguard sensitive IoT data

Designers of internet of things (IoT) devices now have a smarter and more secure way to protect stored, sensitive information with the highly integrated MAX36010 and MAX36011 single-chip security supervisors from Maxim Integrated Products, Inc.

These security solutions make it easier for designers to implement robust tamper detection, cryptography and secure storage while safeguarding sensitive information via logical and physical protections, without having to be security experts themselves.

The MAX36010 and MAX36011 both offer strong security that can be easily integrated into a design at any stage of its development.

Additionally, if these parts are integrated later in the design cycle, there is no need to change the platform to accommodate them, thereby simplifying the implementation process. Compared to competitive solutions, the devices, due to their high level of integration, facilitate a 60 per cent faster design cycle, while also lowering bill of materials (BOM) costs by 20 per cent.

To ensure a higher level of security, these supervisors generate keys via a true random number generator (TRNG).

The keys are then stored in battery-backed RAM along with certificates and other sensitive data.

This data is erased when tampering is detected, a capability that meets the requirements of Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) Publication 140-2 at its highest security levels (Levels 3 and 4).

The MAX36010 and MAX36011 both support symmetric and asymmetric cryptographic functions such as Data Encryption Standard (3DES), Advanced Encryption Standartd (AES), Rivest–Shamir–Adleman (RSA) and Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA).

These secure cryptographic engines are designed and compliant to the requirements of Payment Card Industry (PCI) and FIPS140-2 certifications.

The MAX36010 supports symmetric key generation for AES and 3DES, whereas the MAX36011 supports both symmetric and asymmetric key generations for AES, 3DES, RSA and ECDSA.

Key Advantages

  • Highly integrated: Enables 60 percent faster design cycle and 20 percent lower BOM costs versus the closest competitive solution
    • Includes temperature and voltage sensors, 1Kbyte of secure storage, dynamic tamper sensors, real-time clock (RTC), and TRNG—eliminating the need to use multiple discrete components
    • Integrates multiple cryptographic functions including AES, DES, RSA, ECDSA and Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA) hardware engine
    • Host interfaces include SPI, Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter (UART) and I2C; no firmware development is required to connect to the host processor
  • Robust hardware security: Battery-backed RAM provides storage for sensitive information. Dynamic tamper sensors detect hacking incidents and immediately delete sensitive information
  • Ultra-low power: Offers 70 percent lower battery current consumption compared to the closest competitive solution, which extends end product battery life

An industrial pressure cleaner for the monsoon season

Aussie Pumps has released its new stainless steel Super Scud range of industrial pressure cleaners.  The latest addition in the series is a powerful electric drive 3,000 psi Monsoon 300 Super Scud.

The three-phase industrial blaster features the new “sharp free” ergonomic stainless steel frame fitted with four big “off-road” style steel wheels with flat free tyres.

“The new Monsoon Super Scud looks as good as it works, and works as good as it looks”, said Aussie Pumps’ chief engineer, John Hales.    “We’ve developed the Monsoon Super Scud with features that ensure these Aussie built machines are world class. There isn’t a unit made in Europe that comes near it in terms of performance, quality, features or aesthetics.  The Scud design frame eliminates sharp edges and that’s a huge OH & S benefit”, he said.

With a 7.5kW three-phase electric drive motor, this heavy duty pressure cleaner delivers 21lpm flow. This makes it ideal for a range of industrial applications requiring fast, continuous cleaning including wash bays and machinery wash-down.

The Monsoon 300 uses the TTL series “Big Berty” Bertolini triplex pump with ceramic pistons.  This pump incorporate a big ribbed crank case that ensures it stays cool even in continuous run applications.   The valve caps are fitted with a new Bertolini sealing system designed for higher pressure and longer working hours.

The blaster is classified as Class A under the AS/NZS 4233.01 safety standards and as such do not require operator certification by an RTO.

The power is provided by a heavy duty, IP55 rated, four pole TEFC electric motor.  Like all Aussie blasters, the Monsoon 300 Super Scud features an ASP (Aussie Safety Protection) kit.  The kit includes a thermal dump valve to protect the machine from excessive bypass.  An industrial on/off thermal protection switch prevents overload of the motor and prevents pressure spikes.

High quality accessories complete the package. A heavy-duty gun/lance combination provides the operator with complete control of the machine with a trigger lock that improves comfort even during a long tedious job.

The company is in the process of a product launch on an international market as well.  Australian Pump is a manufacturer of high-pressure water blasters and offers, in addition to the machines, a wide range of labour-saving, high-pressure accessories.

Minimising the loss in fusion splicing

AFL Australia has released the latest version of Fujikura’s active cladding alignment fusion splicing range, the 41S, in the Australia and New Zealand region.

The Fujikura 41S is a fully ruggedised, active cladding alignment fusion splicer. It uses core sensing loss estimation technology to provide accurate assessment of splice loss available in any active cladding alignment splicer. Enabled by Warm Splice Imaging (WSI), the 41S can determine the accuracy of core alignment by evaluation of the splice during the heating process. This technology delivers splice loss estimates with a greater level of accuracy than those based on cladding alignment alone.

The 41S has a six-second splice time and 25-second shrink time, an extended-life battery rated for up to 200 splice and heat cycles, and long-life electrodes lasting 5,000 splices. The 5-inch touchscreen monitor provides simple, intuitive menu navigation and a crystal clear image even in the brightest sunlight. Online software updates allow users to stay up-to-date as new splice programs become available.

The dual-camera, active V-groove alignment system of the 41S provides consistent splicing performance in challenging conditions. Interchangeable sheath clamps or fibre holders provide versatility for user preference, and compatibility with fusion installable connectors. All this inside a fully-ruggedised design that is shock, dust and rain proof, with its own carry case that converts to a work station for maximum portability.

Cleaver management via Bluetooth connection with the CT50 Cleaver tracks usage and enables automated blade rotation as needed. The Fujikura 41S is suitable for use when portability, ruggedness, and reliability are needed for your splicing application.

RFID module for easy IIoT integration

Turck has added an RFID module with an Open Platform Communication Unified Architecture (OPC UA) server to its TBEN-L family, paving the way for the integration and implementation of RFID systems for the Industrial Internet of Things.

OPC UA is a global industry protocol for use on any platform or device, regardless of operating system or programming language. The protocol offers features, including:

• Direct provisioning of information to higher-level systems (MES, ERP, cloud, PLC, etc);

• A seamless integration process, independent of manufacturer or platform;

• Built-in security protocols to protect data from unauthorized users

The TBEN-L5-4RFID-8DXP-OPC-UA provides large volumes of data quickly and simply without requiring fragmentation or a reduction of the data volume. Additionally, the module supports optional commands of the companion specification, such as lock, kill, and password functions for UHF.

The module is suitable for applications involving logistics or tool machines, such as tool monitoring. The fully encapsulated housing and IP67/IP69K rating also allows use in harsh environments or in the field.

Up to four Turck HF and UHF read/write heads – as well as sensors and lights – can be connected via eight digital inputs/outputs (DXPs).

The module is capable of logging operating data, plant availability and utilisation level. This data can then be used to analyse and optimise production processes throughout the supply chain.

Optimised performance with new air compressor technology

Most industries use some form of air or gas compression to generate power to run equipment, tools and plant processes. Yet, in many cases, only 10 to 20 per cent of the energy input to a compressed air system reaches the point of end use. The rest is converted to heat, or is lost through leaks.

To lower energy use and costs, the Ingersoll Rand R-Series air compressor, offered by Caps Australia, has been engineered to require less energy input and more capacity for typical applications, regardless of load.

At the core of this model is an innovative airend, which is the most vital component of every air compressor. The high-capacity next generation R-series 200-250kW models are available with the new, single-stage airend, or the two-stage airend, which increases airflow by up to 21 per cent.

Rotary screw compressors use rotating, meshing male and female helical rotors to compress air. These rotors and their housing contain the airend, which requires complex engineering to improve, because a change to one factor can have a major impact on another. For example, changing the pressure ratio can increase internal air leakage, desired rotor speed and exhaust temperature. This is where expert engineering is critical and Ingersoll Rand accomplished this by applying sophisticated modelling to re-design the convex and concave rotor profiles for optimised airflow.

The Ingersoll Rand next generation R-series with variable speed drive (VSD)  can save up to 35 per cent in energy use over a fixed-speed compressor. Operating a machine as variable speed allows the compressor to deliver compressed air at constant pressure over a wide range of capacities, up to 75 per cent turn down depending on model and pressure rating. With a fixed-speed air compressor, starting up the drive motor creates an energy draw that can be as much as 800 per cent of the full load running current. The company’s motor and drive system limits the in-rush current to less than 100 per cent. This decrease in the starting load minimises peak power charges – therefore lowering energy use.

Advanced air compressors provide additional opportunities to enhance energy efficiencies via remote monitoring. This allows users to control, manage and identify maintenance needs on air compressor systems through their desktop or laptop computers. Users can adjust compressor settings and program compressors according to specific events through real-time schedules. With remote monitoring, users can make better decisions, in a timely manner, so that downtime can be minimised or eliminated.

AS-i signal transmission via fibre optic

ifm’s new Actuator Sensor Interface (AS-i) fibre optic repeater enables AS-Interface signal transmission via an optical medium and vice versa. This allows for cable length extension in the AS-i network.

Every AS-i fibre optic repeater has two independent channels that consist of a transmitting and a receiving element, which are supplied via the  AS-Interface system. Various LEDs indicate the current operating status. This innovation is integrated into the new SmartLine housing.

Optical transmission means there is no interfering radiation, nor are there any ground problems. Fibre optic transmission systems exclude any electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) risk, as a matter of principle. It also eliminates distance related losses due to inductances, capacities and resistances – as is the case with copper cables for example. Consequently, the new AS-i fibre optic repeater contributes decisively to life-time extension and cost reduction.

Using the new AS-i fibre optic repeater allows for additional fibre optic network topologies (line topology, star topology).

Key features:

• AS-Interface signal transmission over a distance of up to 3.2 km

• Possibility of mixed operation (AS-i flat cable and fibre optic)

• Lightning protection, radiated EM interference immunity

• High operational reliability

• Electrical separation

• Plug-in connection terminals

New data cables for low-duty cycle machines

Treotham has introduced a new, cost-effective data cable by igus, for builders of low duty cycle machines. Data cables are used in a variety of sectors, from machine tools to robots. The cables must always withstand forces when running in energy chains.

Igus’s CF8821 data cables are suitable for applications without high mechanical requirements, such as adjustment devices, encoder units, and wood or stone processing machines.  According to Treotham, machine builders can save up to 30 per cent cost using the CF8821 data cables compared to standard chainflex data cables offered by the company.

Offered with small cross-sections, the new cable is suitable for use in e-chains with a bend radius of 12.5 x d. The highly flexible PVC outer jacket is silicone-free and flame-retardant. Igus is the only manufacturer on the market to offer a 36-month guarantee on its cable range. Treotham also promises a service life of up to five million cycles for the new data cable.

In addition to the guarantee, UL approval of the CF8821 cables opens up possibilities for machine builders exporting to the American market. UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories, which is a comprehensively accepted test organisation in the USA.

One of the biggest challenges for international plant manufacturers is the different technical standards and norms on the OEM and operator side in North America. Organisations in Europe and America have been trying to harmonise their regulations for years. The motion plastics specialist, igus, makes an important contribution towards the harmonisation with 1,044 out of the total 1,354 cables in its portfolio having UL-certification.

With more than 1,300 products, Treotham offers a wide range of energy chain cables with international approvals, including cables with the UL certification.

Maxim Integrated PPG and ECG biosensor module for mobile devices

Designers now have an easier way to deliver both photoplethysmogram (PPG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) measurements for health monitoring from a mobile, battery-powered device.

The new MAX86150 from Maxim Integrated Products is a first-of-a kind biosensor module, comprised of internal LEDs, photodetectors and an ECG analog front-end (AFE) to provide highly accurate, FDA-certifiable PPG and ECG performance in compact, power-saving designs, including mobile phones, laptops, tablets and smart speakers.

Delivering synchronized PPG and ECG measurements has been challenging because designers have had to utilise two separate biosensors that together consume more board space and power than a mobile device can typically afford.

In addition, achieving high accuracy in the measurements has also been challenging, particularly in cases where sensor sensitivity might be impacted by low perfusion levels or dry skin.

The MAX86150 overcomes these challenges, sampling both PPG and ECG simultaneously to provide the highest sensitivity of pulse transit time.

To reduce battery drain, the module can be shut down through software with near-zero standby current, allowing the power rails to remain powered at all times. The MAX86150 is available in a 3.3mm x 6.6mm x 1.3mm, 22-pin optical module.

Key Advantages

  • Highly Accurate: at 136dB, the module’s common mode rejection ratio (CMRR), a measurement of noise rejection, is the highest on the market. Its 100mA-capable, high-dynamic-range LED driver enables higher sensitivity on an array of skin types. A low-impedance contact for the ECG sensor enables more accurate measurements, even in cases of dry skin.
  • Long Battery Life: minimizes battery drain with ultra-low shutdown current of 0.7μA typical. Power consumption less than the closest competitive device further extends battery life compared to competitive solutions.
  • Ease of Deployment: its dry electrode operation eliminates the need for gels, fluids and sticky or wet pads on other parts of the body to obtain accurate readings.
  • Small Form Factor: the same size as a stand-alone ECG sensor, integrating an ECG sensor with an optical PPG sensor saves space and provides much more functionality without requiring a third electrode (which competitive solutions require).

Robust mass flow meters and controllers for gases from Bronkhorst

Instrumentation and calibration specialist, AMS, is now distributing Bronkhorst products, including robust mass flow meters and controllers for gases.

Mass-Stream instruments operate on the basis of direct through-flow measurement in accordance with the constant temperature anemometer principle.

They contain no moving parts and the measured gases pass the two stainless steel sensor probes directly, without bypass.

As a result, the gases are entirely unhindered on their flow path, making the series particularly suitable for applications with low pressure loss as well as less sensitive to moisture and particulate contamination than thermal mass flow instruments with a bypass sensor.

The electronics casing has a robust design with an IP65 level of protection (dustproof and splash waterproof).

The mass flow meters and controllers can be supplied with an optional integrated multifunctional display.

On the new D-6390 model, the maximum measuring range has been expanded to 10,000 ln/min air equivalent.

Analogue I/O signals as well as an RS232 interface are provided by default. In addition, an interface with DeviceNet, PROFIBUS DP, Modbus or FLOW-BUS protocols can be integrated.

Typical applications include gas consumption measurements, aeration and purging processes or natural gas/biogas applications.

AMS has been appointed Bronkhorst’s distributor, as of December 1.

weCat3D profile sensor MLSL2: Treotham expands 3D portfolio

Wenglor 2D/3D sensors from Treotham have experienced a strong growth: The new performance class for weCat3D profile sensors MLSL2 includes a total of ten innovative models. As a result of this expansion, the sensors provide even more options for three-dimensional object measurement. In particular they permit large visual field widths of up to 1350 mm in the X direction, as well as increased laser power and even more extensive and faster profile detection.

Whereas MLSL series sensors have thus far only been capable of covering visual field widths of up to 280 mm in the X direction, the ten new models offer visual field widths of up to 1350 mm in the X direction. This means that significantly larger objects can now be detected than in the past.

Diverse applications such as bin picking, pick and place, gap measurement, object counting and 3D sealant bead monitoring represent only a small portion of the possible uses for this technology.

“Expansion of the performance range of the MLSL series is making it possible for us to provide outstanding point cloud quality with a very broad visual field over a large distance”, explains wenglorMEL managing director Torsten Hellerström. “And all of these features are included in a compact housing.”

With dimensions of just 200 x 67 x 38 mm, the ten new models represent a successful mixture of performance and compact design. Variants with different laser classes including 2M, 3R and 3B and red or blue light also provide customers with maximum diversity for product selection.

The Functional Principle: Three-Dimensional Object Measurement with Laser

The high speeds and accuracy offered by the sensors result from their functional principle: The 2D/3D sensors project a laser line onto the object to be measured and then record it by means of an integrated camera. Two and three-dimensional surface and volume profiles can thus be calculated with the help of point clouds – quickly and accurately.

With a total of 81 different variants in the weCat3D series, the 3D experts at Treotham offer greatest possible diversity for the implementation of multi-dimensional applications.
