Digital two-way radio system

MOTOROLA has announced the availability of its MOTOTRBO professional digital two-way radio system in Australia, bringing a host of new features including global positioning system (GPS) and data to radio users.

MOTOTRBO combines two-way radio with digital technology to deliver increased capacity and efficiency. It supports enhanced voice communications and data applications, such as text messaging and GPS-based location services.

Additionally, it is a comprehensive dual mode (analogue and digital) system including portable and mobile radios, a repeater, accessories and data applications — making it possible for businesses to easily and affordably migrate to a digital platform at their own pace.

The addition of this platform to the company’s APCO P25 and TETRA product suites makes Motorola the only manufacturer capable of offering solutions across all digital radio standards in Australia and therefore satisfying the broad range of user requirements in the marketplace.

By leveraging Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) technology, MOTOTRBO doubles the effective capacity of a customer’s repeater channels within the 12.5kHz channel structure already utilised throughout the world.

This straightforward re-use of spectrum accommodates more users on the system within existing licensing requirements. This can increase the customer’s capacity for wireless voice and data communications.

In addition, by utilising TDMA technology, the MOTOTRBO platform lets a single repeater deliver the benefits of two analogue repeaters, allowing businesses to realise up to a 50 per cent reduction in repeater costs when compared with equivalent analogue systems.

One of the biggest challenges with mobile devices has been battery life. By cutting the call transmit time in half, using two-slot TDMA, MOTOTRBO provides a longer talk time with up to 40 per cent longer battery life than comparable analogue radios. Battery consumption per call is dramatically reduced, enabling much longer usage time in the field between recharges.
