Potentially faulty airbag inflators lead to recall of Japanese-made cars

A global recall of Mazda, Nissan, Toyota and Honda cars due to an airbag component made by Takata Corporation would affect 2.92 vehicles, says Japan’s transport ministry.

Toyota USA explained in a statement, reported by AP, that, "The involved vehicles are equipped with front passenger airbag inflators which could have been assembled with improperly manufactured propellant wafers.

"Improperly manufactured propellant wafers could cause the inflator to rupture and the front passenger airbag to deploy abnormally in the event of a crash.''

An improperly deployed airbag could send out flying pieces of plastic and potentially catch fire.

According to The Australian Financial Review, over 10,000 cars sold in Australia and manufactured between 2000 and 2004 will be affected.

Honda will recall 9,980 vehicles, Toyota 1700, Mazda 597,www.afr.com/p/national/australian_cars_in_global_recall_IcIT3tU2Oc1LPkpaMhS7eL and Nissan a currently unknown number.
