NSW government looking to support naval manufacturers at Maritime Expo

From 2019 until 2021, the PACIFIC International Maritime Expo will be held in Sydney.

The expo is one of the largest defence and maritime industry events in the world, and the NSW government will assist local manufacturers to connect with international markets at the event, according to Minister for Trade and Industry John Barilaro.

“NSW defence and maritime companies will be exhibiting to win global export sales and we’ll be directly supporting 16 of them on our stand to open doors and close deals,” said Barilaro.

PACIFIC offers an opportunity for NSW manufacturers to meet with leaders from the Royal Australian Navy, Department of Defence and global prime manufacturers.

NSW is already home to defence manufacturers such as Thales, Bisalloy and Thomas Global Systems. NSW defence advocate John Harvey hopes that locating PACIFIC in NSW further develops the local defence manufacturing industry. Harvey noted NSW’s highly skilled workforce and well-regarded academic institutions that include a focus on defence and maritime research as contributing to the defence industry.

“This makes NSW an ideal location for sustainable, globally-competitive and technologically advanced defence industries to flourish and prosper,” said Harvey.

As a promoter for local defence industry and manufacturing, Harvey sees the potential for the industry to develop in specific sectors.

“Defence NSW sees strong growth potential for companies working with munitions, cyber security, data analytics and space,” said Harvey.

The biannual expo was last held in Sydney in 2017 and saw 79 visiting delegations from 53 nations, with 18 major conferences seminars and symposia, and a total of 16,765 attendances. 546 companies exhibited at the three-day event. The ties between the event and the NSW government have broadened Australian industry’s global reach, according to PACIFIC 2019 CEO Ian Honnery.

“It extends what has always been a close working relationship with the NSW Government—together we are taking Australian industry to the world, by bringing the world to Australia,” said Honnery.
