Novice go-kart designed with CAD wins chance to manufacture

Victorian go-kart designer Ben Murphy has won the first stage of the Electric Superbike Project competition, which rewards industry-leading designs using CAD/CAM software.

The goal of the competition is to involve aspiring and professional designers across Australia and New Zealand to collaboratively design, test and build a state-of-the-art electric superbike using SolidWorks, a CAD/CAM software platform distributed by Intercad in Australia.

The first stage of the competition – the frame design – attracted more than 100 registrations, and Murphy’s entry was chosen from a shortlist of three that included Victorian Chris Peters and Simon Teed from Queensland.

The Electric Superbike Project is run by Intercad; it is a community-based competition, which anyone can enter, run by CAD/CAM specialist Intercad along with Triple Eight Race Engineering and Racetech Steel.

As the winner of the first stage of the competition, Murphy receives a HP Z200 workstation from competition sponsor Hewlett Packard Australia, along with the chance to work with some of the leaders in automotive design to help refine his design before it is manufactured.

Once the bike is complete, the final design will be road-tested by racing celebrity, TeamVodafone’s V8 Supercar Championship Driver, Craig Lowndes.

The next stage of the competition focuses on the drivetrain and wheels for the bike. The Electric Superbike Blog will feature winners’ details.
