Nominations open for Manufacturing Skills Awards

Manufacturing Skills Queensland today announced that nominations are open for the 2013 Manufacturing Skills Awards, to be held in Brisbane on May 30.

Manufacturing Skills Awards recognise outstanding contributions to Queensland manufacturing and engineering, showcasing industry successes and insights in twelve categories rewarding schools, apprentices, indigenous apprentices, trainees, students, teachers, training organisations and small to medium and large employers.

Industry members can nominate individuals, companies and training organisations for their invaluable contribution to the Queensland manufacturing industry.

The awards are part of the Manufacturing Skills annual conference, organised by QMI Solutions, which unites industry, government, and training organisations to address challenges facing the industry.

QMI Solutions CEO David Harrison said the Manufacturing Skills Awards were integral to acknowledging education and innovation in the sector, especially in the current economic climate.

“It has been a tough year for the industry, but the Manufacturing Skills Awards provide an opportunity to celebrate the dedication of individuals, employers and schools with a positive outlook to the future,” Mr Harrison said.

“As businesses are confronted with challenging conditions, it has become even more important for companies to train young people and maintain the pipeline of skills and career opportunities.”

Last year’s Manufacturing Apprentice of the Year, Russell Waldock, said it was an honour to be recognised by the industry and encouraged others to submit their nominations.

“The Manufacturing Skills Awards are held in high esteem and it was fantastic to have my work acknowledged,” Mr Waldock said.

“I think it is very important to recognise that our generation’s skills are key to developing the industry and the Manufacturing Skills Awards support this.

“An apprenticeship has definitely given me more opportunities, and I am still working full time with a major infrastructure group Downer EDI.”

Nominations can be submitted online at, applications close on May 3.
