MORE than 80 manufacturing jobs will be cut from Kenworth’s truck manufacturing plant at Bayswater.
The Manufacturing Workers Union announced yesterday that the redundancies were anticipated. Production at the plant is set to drop from more than 20 trucks a day, to about eight.
The company will not say exactly how many jobs are being axed but it is blaming the cuts on a drop in market demand, with sales suffering from high fuel prices and interest rates.
According to Union spokesman, Ian Jones, the job losses are a result of the slowing economy.
“At the moment we’re seeing businesses fall over left, right and centre,” he said.
“We’ve got shifts that are closing, plants that are closing, and only last week we saw 360 jobs made redundant at Ford, which will have enormous effects within manufacturing industry.”
