Volkswagen led in global car sales for the first half of the year, ahead of Toyota and General Motors.
AP reports that Volkswagen overtook Toyota, selling 5.04 million vehicles to 5.02 million. GM was third placed and its figures are expected to be released on Thursday.
Volkswagen’s CEO had earlier named a goal of overtaking Toyota by 2018, though refused to claim the figures as a victory.
"We do not comment on the figures of other automakers," Volkswagen spokeswoman Jeannine Ginivan told USA Today.
"The goal of the Volkswagen Group is to focus on qualitative growth and not being No. 1 in sales."
The placings could change by the end of the year.
Last year Toyota sold the most vehicles overall, ahead of Volkswagen. Their tallies were 10.23 million and 10.14 million respectively.
