A $3 million contract for SEM Fire and Rescue in Ballarat will be a boost for the region’s manufacturing sector, according to the Australian Industry Group.
SEM earned a contract last week to build 20 Country Fire Authority trucks for the Victorian government, securing four years of work for the company.
"In some circumstances some companies have been forced to be working three days a week or four days a week and just … holding onto people," the Ai Group’s state director, Tim Piper, told the ABC.
"This is really positive because it means that the Government is not just looking to go overseas to buy many of these products but looking locally first and making sure that they can get value out of spending locally."
SEM said that the contract would help secure jobs at the company and at its suppliers.
The Ballarat company’s history goes back over half a century, according to its website, and it began as the manufacturing division of the CFA.
