Union concerned Gippsland manufacturing under pressure

Unions are concerned about further job losses in Gippsland’s manufacturing sector, following recent job losses announced in Victoria.

The region's manufacturing employment has declined from 10,700 to 7,400 jobs from 2008 to February 2013, reports La Trobe Valley Express.

Speaking before the announcement last week that Ford would stop manufacturing in Australia, with 1,200 job cuts in Geelong and Broadmeadows, the Australian Workers Union’s Ian Thomas told the Express that, "All manufacturers in Australia are struggling, you only need to look at the car companies, the high Australian dollar plays a big part in it."

Aerospace company GippsAero, described as the valley’s “flagship manufacturing operation” announced earlier this month that it would cut 40 jobs.
