Toyota is once again the world’s most popular car maker, selling 9.75 million units last year.

AAP reports  that General Motors led Toyota in 2011, after natural disasters ravaged Japan that year and interrupted Toyota’s production.

Last year the Japanese company increased its sales by 22.6 per cent, overtaking GM, which sold 9.28 million cars, followed by Volkswagon (9.07 million). According to Bloomberg, Toyota’s sale of 9.75 million cars is its best result, beating the previous record of 9.37 million set in 2007.

Global car sales were up strongly worldwide, reports SBS, despite continuing bad economic news.

Toyota is also the biggest-selling car company in Australia, and in October last year Toyota Australia recorded its millionth exported vehicle.
