Thieves steel 40,000 products from Samsung factory

About 20 armed robbers stole 40,000 products including smartphones,
laptops, and tablets from a Samsung factory in south-eastern Brazil on Monday.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the incident took place
late at night at the company’s plant in the city of Campinas near Sao Paulo.

The gunmen hijacked a bus carrying Samsung employees and
took the driver and a passenger hostage. They then travelled to the plant where
they disarmed security guards and performed the heist. Seven trucks were used to remove the stolen goods.

As reported by Associated Press, the police first estimated
the value of the goods to be $US36m. However, according to a person familiar
with the matter, the actual value of the stolen goods was about $US6.4m.

“It is regrettable the incident took place. However, it
is fortunate that there were no casualties,” a Samsung spokesman said in a
statement.

He said that Police
are investigating the incident and Samsung is cooperating with authorities on
the matter.
