Submarine recommendation made to government, decision could come within fortnight

The “Competitive Evaluation Process” by the defence department has concluded, with a “clear winner” selected from the three bids and the decision to be considered by Cabinet’s National Security Committee today.

The Australian reports that the 14-month assessment of the French, Japanese and German consortia bids has finished.

The winner of the CEP is based on a technical evaluation of the “best submarine for Australia’s needs” and allows the government to make a decision free from accusations of playing politics.

AAP reports that prime minister Malcolm Turnbull would not comment on submarines during yesterday’s announcement on naval shipbuilding.

The conclusion of the submarine evaluation now “paves the way” for an announcement on the $50 billion submarine project within the next two weeks, according to The Australian.
