The Australian Steel Convention 2012 has been opened today by Industry Minister Greg Combet at the Hyatt Hotel in Canberra.
The convention will discuss the future of steel manufacturing in Australia, and industry that employs about 90,000 people.
Combet will outline the federal government's manufacturing and innovation policies and the impact they will have on the industry, reports the Australian.
The opposition will also talk about their manufacturing policies on Tuesday with an address from shadow treasurer Joe Hockey and a video address from opposition industry spokeswoman Sophie Mirabella.
Close to 200 people are expected to attend the convention.
