Shrink-wrap keeps helicopters protected for sea voyage

INTEGRA Packaging has just completed the packaging of ten Super Seasprite military helicopters and their components so that they can be shipped back to the US.

A major part of this project has been protecting the aircraft with a specialised anti-corrosive shrink-wrap called Intercept Technology.

According to Matt Hill from Integra Packaging this has never been done before in Australia. Kaman Aerospace is shipping the ten Super Seasprite helicopters to the US from the Naval Air Station at Nowra, and needed to ensure that the aircraft and the sensitive equipment fitted to them were adequately protected during transit to and from the ports at either end of the journey as well as during the sea voyage.

The aircraft needed to be wrapped in a manner that provided roll on/roll off and tie down capability.

Hill said the unique protection requirements for such high-value aero equipment required the use of Corrosion Intercept Shrink film to meet the conditions of sea transit.

“Access to controls had to be maintained for loading purposes, so we provided ‘zippered’ hatchways to cockpits – constructed from the same material,” Hill said.

Roger Till, MD of Integra Packaging said the versatility of this anti-corrosion technology suits a wide range of applications, quite apart from military, and makes it ideal for a broad range of purposes.

“With this protective product available here in Australia, companies which previously had to rely on imported expertise can now source it locally.

“Imagine wrapping and transporting an aircraft, a yacht, a truck, a train, mining equipment – or even a box of cut flowers for export! This technology can cover them all with an appropriate product, then shrink-wrap to size” Till said.

“In many mine sites in the WA northwest, you’re likely to see ghostly white objects being transported or sitting in storage yards.

“Covered in white plastic film, these objects are better protected than they would be under a traditional tarpaulin covering.

“For transport and storage applications, large sheets of heat shrink plastic film provide a simple to apply, yet robust packaging solution for all types of items, large and small,” he said.
