Sharp starts production at new Indonesian factory

Japan’s Sharp Corp announced yesterday that its plant in Karawang, Indonesia, has begun producing washing machines, as it looks to take advantage of rising consumer demand in the country.

The Karawang site specialises in larger appliances, and will begin producing fridges in October. The output capacity for these appliances will be 140,000 and 220,000 units per month of washing machines and fridges respectively.

Manufacturing Net reports that operations have begun three months ahead of when they were originally scheduled, as competition from South Korean companies Samsung and LG for the growing market intensifies.
