The Quinn couple – Tony and Christina, owners of Gold Coast-based VIP Petfoods – are the new owners of Darrell Lea.
The Quinns have bought the manufacturing and distribution portions of Lea, reports the Australian Financial Review, and they will do away with 27 retail stores.
"Our company has a strong history of building sustainable Australian-based businesses, and it is our aim to do the same with Darrell Lea," said a VIP spokesman in a statement reported by the Herald Sun.
The family-owned Darrell Lea went into administration in July. The company-owned stores will close this Sunday.
“These stores have been consistently loss-making for a number of years and did not attract any meaningful interest during the sale process,” Mark Robinson of PPB Advisory told The Australian.
83 workers will be employed in manufacturing, marketing and distribution, according to the AFR. 418 jobs (246 full-time and the rest casuals) will be shed. Darrell Lea’s products will be stocked by 1200-plus outlets.
