Orora Cartons factory closure at Petone would cost 62 jobs

Sixty-two jobs are at risk if the Orora Cartons Petone
factory closes, according to the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union.

Fairfax reports that a decision on the future of the
Petone, Wellington site is expected next month, with the possibility that the
site may close in mid-2016.

The facility is co-located with Unilever, the packaging
company’s biggest customer in New Zealand, and Unilever will end manufacturing
at Petone in mid-next year.

“They’re a major customer for Orora in Wellington and it’s
just not economical for them to stay open,” the EPMU’s Joe Gallagher said, according to 3News.

“This just shows why we
need a strong, well-supported manufacturing sector. The loss of one major
player is having a massive effect on everyone else. There’s no one to fill the
gap.”

Orora says it is considering transferring production, as
well as some skilled and experienced workers, to other sites at Auckland and
Christchurch, the company’s other two sites.
