NZ steel body says Chinese product not always up to snuff

Structural steel association Steel Construction NZ has said that care is needed when dealing with Chinese prefabricated steel in the Christchurch rebuilding effort.

Fairfax reports that Alister Fussell from SCNZ has said he knows of several Auckland projects that used inferior quality imported steel – which wasn’t up to Australian and NZ standards or failed testing and had to be removed.

“The issue with China is . . . there are legitimate concerns around quality in terms of materials, workmanship,” Fussell told Fairfax.

“That’s not to say they don’t have shops that couldn’t do good work, but the trouble is you don’t know what you’re dealing with.”
