No Joy for Unanderra workers as mining machinery plant shuts down

The Australian subsidiary of mining giant Joy Global is closing its Unanderra plant, with the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union claiming that 50 jobs will be lost as a result.

The Illawarra Mercury reports that the Unanderra operations would be transferred to Joy’s Moss Vale site by the beginning of November.

"A review of Joy Global Australasia's regional manufacturing and service capacity has resulted in a decision to cease operations in Unanderra,” the company’s Timothy Fitzsimmons told the Mercury.

"We are continuing to review our operational requirements and are working with our employees and the [Australian Manufacturing Workers Union] to determine the exact number of roles we may be able to relocate to our Moss Vale facility."

The AMWU has predicted that “60 – 70 per cent” of the Unanderra site’s workers would lose their employment.

"The employees are struggling to understand why this is happening. It's been a good performing unit," the AMWU’s John Stewart said.
