Former federal industry spokeswoman Sophie Mirabella has been given a position on the board of the government-owned ASC Pty Ltd, formerly Australian Submarine Corporation.
Finance minister Matthias Cormann cited Mirabella’s, “extensive experience working with the manufacturing industry” and the former barrister’s legal background.
Labor criticised the appointment of Mirabella, a close ally of prime minister Tony Abbott while she was in parliament. The opposition said it goes against Abbott’s claim there were no plans to give former MPs government jobs, and that the timing of the news was cynical.
Labor treasury spokesman Chris Bowen Tweeted soon after, ”As we win the ashes & at 5.00 on MYEFO day Govt announces they will appoint S Mirabella to a job. Obviously an appointment they are proud of.”
ASC is responsible for defence projects including the Air Warfare Destroyer and Collins Class Submarines.
The two other appointments announced yesterday to the ASC board were Peter Iancov, formerly of Alinta, and Paul Rizzo, whose resume includes time as an executive at BlueScope Steel.
