Manufacturing key to growing Mid West WA, says report

A report on
regional planning in West Australia’s mid-west identified the manufacturing
sector as a way to strengthen and diversify the local economy.

The ABC
reports that the Regional Planning and Infrastructure Framework report put the
knowledge economy and manufacturing forward as ways to develop the region in
the future.

CEO of the
Mid West Development Commission, Gavin Treasure, said local manufacturing had
opportunities in supplying the mining sector within the region and elsewhere,
such as the Pilbara.

“Manufacturing
was identified as a key aspiration in the framework planning, so that’s been
identified as a potential area of interest going forward,” he told the
ABC.

The
dominant industries in the mid-west of the state are mining, agriculture and
tourism, with the majority of local manufacturers, “based around servicing the
needs of the agricultural, mining and fishing industry sectors”, according to
the MWDC.
