Impact of Toyota closure ‘not material’: BlueScope

BlueScope Steel has said it expects the flow-on impact of Toyota’s exit from Australian manufacturing to be minimal.

BlueScope
Steel has said that the three years’ notice and its focus on the building and
construction industry mean that it expects the flow-on impact of Toyota’s exit
from Australian manufacturing to be minimal to its business.

The
Illawarra Mercury reports
that a BlueScope spokesman wouldn’t comment on the
sort of hit the company – which reportedly provides 14,000 tonnes of steel a
year to the Japanese car-maker – would take financially, or the number of jobs
affected. However, the company representative said, “the overall impact to BlueScope is not
considered material”.

Toyota
announced last week that it would end its manufacturing operations in Australia
in 2017, following Ford and Holden. The decision came earlier than some expected, with the company repeatedly stating that it would announce a decision
“mid-year” on whether or not it would produce the next-generation Camry in
Australia.
