The Aachen, Germany-based Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology will partner in the new Innovative Manufacturing CRC. It is the only German research organisation to do so.
The IMCRC gained a $40 million funding approval for its establishment late last month and will focus on themes of additive manufacturing, assistive technologies, high-value product development, and industry transformation.
The ILT will provide personnel, plant and system technology. According to a statement, it will play a key role in areas including additive manufacturing for 3D multi-material systems and expanding their areas of application including electrical engineering (for microphones) and medical technology (for implants).
Among the 18 companies initially signing up to the CRC are RØDE Microphones and Stryker Corporation (a med tech firm).
The Fraunhofer Society is a group of 66 institutes and research units in Germany, each dealing with a different theme of applied research.
