Following the popularity of its Fusion model in the United States, Ford Motor Co has taken to assembly line simulations to train 1,400 new recruits at the company’s Flat Rock assembly plant in Michigan.
New car sales in the United States have increased every month for the last 25 months, according to Bloomberg.
Sales of Fusion sedans are up 18 per cent in the first half of the year, according to the company, and the simulation program – which the company hopes to eventually implement worldwide – is being used to get new recruits up to speed. Fusion is currently being made only in Mexico.
“The simulated factory provides workers with a much smoother transition to the assembly line, and the net benefit to the company is improved quality,”Canadian Manufacturing reports Aris Janitens, manager of launch planning and workforce readiness at Ford as saying.
The process can currently accommodate 50 trainees in an eight-hour session, with a 5:1 student to instructor ratio. It was developed at Ford’s Louisville assembly plant.
Activities simulated include everything from connecting brake lines to tightening nuts and bolts.
Ford has also been on an aggressive recruitment drive, launching a social media and advertising campaign titled The Distance Between You and an Amazing Career Has Never Been Shorter.
