Don’t follow the US, support manufacturing jobs: Coke boss

Coca-Cola CEO Terry Davis says the benefits of Australia's manufacturing sector are “significant” and the nation should do what it can to stem further job losses in the industry.

According to Fairfax Media, Davis said the United States was only just starting to recover from a “huge” loss in its manufacturing sector, and Australia should not allow the same thing to happen.

He also said the car manufacturing sector boosted the wider economy, and the industry needed to be supported.

“The downstream, flow-on benefits that are derived from the [Australian] car industry, and you hear this from the Americans as well, are significant,” he said.

Manufacturing unions have also joined Davis in talking up the flow-on effects of the sector.

Earlier this month both Ford and Holden revealed they had received over $3 billion in Government handouts.
