DR MIKE Hirshorn, pioneer of biomedical devices, has died of cancer.
In the early 1980s, Dr Hirshorn helped to found Cochlear and expand it to the US, Europe and Japan, and also played a founding director role in Resmed.
Dir Hirshorn graduated in medicine, and took on a job as a research assistance in Telectronics, which was part of the Nuclear Group.
He then studied for an MBA, then moved to Cochlear, which specialises in ear implants that restore hearing.
In 2004, he was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for commercialising medical technology.
