Adelaide’s SMR Automotive loses Ford contract, reportedly lays off 100 workers

SMR Automotive of Lonsdale has reportedly made 100 redundancies following the loss of a major export contract with Ford.

Adelaide’s InDaily reports that the news was confirmed by SA manufacturing minister Kyam Maher, and involved SMR’s supply of next-generation mirrors for the Ford F250.

Maher told the news website it followed an optimistic meeting with the company over its diversification prospects.

“During my visits to the company, they’ve told me they’re looking at diversifying into areas like medical devices, and will continue to manufacture lighting components, exterior door handles, and fuel filler doors,” Maher told InDaily.

SMR had developed the world’s first “plastic glass” mirrors with the University of South Australia’s Mawson Institute.

Last month The Adelaide Advertiser reported that SMR had applied for global certification for medical device manufacturing, with the process expected to be finished in March.
