Adelaide looks set to build submarines

As speculation continues that the Japanese bid is out of contention in the three-cornered contest to build Australia’s new submarine fleet, it appears that all of the new vessels will be built in Adelaide.

The Australian Financial Review reportsthat most or possibly all of the submarines will be built in Adelaide, with the decision possibly announced as soon as next week.

Defence minister Marise Payne wrote in The Advertiser yesterday that “South Australia is set to benefit for decades to come from this investment”.

This week it was reported by The Australianthat the Japanese bid was seen as the weakest of the three – behind France’s DCNS and Germany’s TKMS – by the defence department review.

The National Security Committee of cabinet has held meetings this week following the delivery of the report.
